Sydney 11 & 12 September 2009

BEST of INPUT is a two-day conference dedicated to both excellence in public
broadcasting and to current, cutting edge television making.
Featuring International guests Hans Robert Eisenhauer Commissioning Editor
from ARTE/ZDF Germany, Judy Tam CFO of ITVS in the US,
and Jo Raknes, Executive Producer with NRK in Norway, BEST OF INPUT (Australia) provides
a dynamic forum, where commissioning editors and television makers come together to view and discuss
the most innovative programs screened by international public broadcasters over the last year.
"It's an intense and take-no-prisoners forum that can be as revelatory for the presenters as it is
for the inquiring audience."
Courtney Gibson (executive head of content creation, ABC TV).
"INPUT puts the best of public TV from around the globe on display,
dissects the shows and celebrates those who made them. Nearly two years
later, I'm still getting through the list of fabulous stealable ideas I took from there! Totally inspiring
"
Ian Walker, documentary Producer & Director.
INPUT is an international television conference based on the principle that television made with public
money should be made in the public interest. The many countries that participate in INPUT (this year held
in Warsaw) also run their own mini version of the conference. BEST of INPUT here in September will be the
first time that Australia will have a stand-alone event (previously run in conjunction with
the ADG Conference). This development is intended to sow the seeds for Australia hosting the week
long International INPUT Conference in 2012 which will attract over 700 delegates from around the world.
This year BEST of INPUT presents highlights of the international conference offering a rare opportunity
to Australian producers and commissioners to view some of the most influential and ground-breaking television
programs produced here and internationally. It also affords high-level, equal and open debate between program
makers and commissioners everywhere.
Special guests and moderators include: John Godfrey (Executive Producer Factual, SBS TV),
Vincent Beasley (Executive Producer of Entertainment/Factual SBS TV), Jon Casimir (Zapruder’s Other Films),
Jessica Douglas-Henry (Iris Pictures), Caterina De Nave (Executive Producer of Drama/Comedy SBS TV),
Ian Collie (Essential Viewing), Safina Uberoi (Divana Films), Aviva Ziegler,
Alan Erson (Executive Producer New Science & History ABC TV), Ruth Cullen (Head of Documentary AFTRS),
Julia Overton (Screen Australia) and Graeme Isaac (INPUT AUSTRALIA representative).
"...this sort of debate is far more successful in helping you make relationships with like-minded
people than any other form of networking.
"
Helen Bowden (producer)
Local television professionals, both directors, producers and commissioners, will present sessions with
overseas program makers joining the discussion via video link. Local presenters and guests will include commissioning
editors from SBS and ABC, across all genres as well as key directors and producers.
BEST of INPUT highlights include:
Gaza/Sderot - Life in Spite of Everything
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has moved into cyberspace. ARTE commissioned an extraordinary interactive
website that explores this conflict in ways that single channel work has not. Find out from the commissioning
editor why ARTE put the equivalent of a Free to Air presale into it, and how they are
preparing themselves for the merger of TV with the internet.

Cloud 9

screen such a program in Australia?

Festival de Cannes
Chicago Ten
Stylish ITVS documentary about the 1969 trial against eight anti-Vietnam war protestors and their lawyers who took part in riots during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. It was one of the most controversial trials
of the period, a media circus with the defendants on a collision course with government authority. No cameras were allowed in
the courtroom but this innovative documentary uses animation to dramatise and bring the court transcripts to life.

Manshow

more than 10,000 "revenge" ads, which have been viewed online over 550,000 times. We will view and discuss the online

This kinky Aussie program didn’t just arrive on the screen ready made, but evolved from a

RIP Remix Manifesto
The whole traditional framework of the Rights Business is proving to be unsustainable. Reality is already far
beyond the old legal frame, especially for younger people. Is the traditional way of dealing with rights still
sustainable?
A Remix Manifesto:
1. Culture always builds on the past
2. The past always tries to control the future
3. Our future is becoming less free
4. To build a free society you must limit the control of the past.
